Aviation Day 2026 was, yes, a piece of cake

Orville Wright’s birthday cake was created by the Bearded Baking Co. of Manchester, N.H.

The Aviation Museum’s participation in Aviation Day, held on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, included a large sheet cake honoring aviation pioneer Orville Wright, whose birthday (yes, Aug. 19) inspired President Franklin D. Roosevelt to proclaim the date as “Aviation Day” in 1939. (Alas, brother Wilbur Wright was long gone by then, having died in 1912; Orville lived until 1948.)

The cake, which was quickly demolished by Aviation Day attendees, was created by the Bearded Baking Co. on Union Street in Manchester.

In non-cake news, the Aviation Museum also displayed the two-seat Van’s RV-12iS recreational aircraft build by students at the Manchester (N.H.) School of Technology. Aviation Day also marked the debut of a new exhibit about our popular ‘Flights of Discovery’ aviation summer camp program.

Many thanks to our neighbors at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and all other participants for making Aviation Day a great success once again. Thanks also to museum board member and pilot Bob Hough and Andrew Fournier of MHT Operations for coordinating the movement and display of the RV-12iS aircraft in the airport’s short-term parking lot.
