Student plane-building volunteers ‘Take Flight’ in two-day mentor training at Lebanon (N.H.) High School

Volunteer mentors assembling the vertical stabilizer of a Van’s Aircraft RV-12iS during a two-day training program at Lebanon High School’s new plane-building workshop “hangar.”

They’re preparing to Take Flight! That’s what about two dozen volunteer mentors did this week during a two-day training program at Lebanon (N.H.) High School to get ready for the school’s new ‘Take Flight’ student plane-building program.

Led by Dan Weyant of partner Tango Flight, the training program gave school faculty and volunteers hands-on experience in techniques used to assemble an all-metal two-seat Van’s Aircraft RV-12iS.

Participants worked together to practice-build a vertical stabilizer, or tail. When the build starts next month, volunteers will mentor students in the workshop; it’s expected to take two years for the first aircraft to be completed.

The two-day training program was the first time the high school’s “hangar” (a renovated three-bay garage) was put to use.

The student plane-building program, funded by grants as well as donations from businesses and individuals, is a partnership between the Lebanon School District, Tango Flight, and the non-profit Aviation Museum of New Hampshire, and Tango Flight.
