What does it take for high school students to build an airplane? Adult volunteer mentors! So we were pleased to welcome about two dozen prospective volunteer plane-building mentors to an open house held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Aviation Museum.
Attendees inspected a two-seat Van’s Aircraft RV-12iS completed by students at the Manchester School of Technology, and then heard from MST instructor Jeff Sullivan as well as current mentors about what it’s like to help students build an airplane.
The Manchester plane-building program, a partnership between the museum, the school, and non-profit TangoFlight is entering its fifth year; a second plane is about 60 percent complete, and plans are underway for Plane #3 to start construction.
Thanks to all who attended last night’s meeting! If you missed the open house but would like more info on volunteering for this innovative hands-on learning program, please contact Jeff Rapsis, museum executive director, via email at jrapsis@nhahs.org.
